Student Programs
Connecting Classroom and Coastline
Programs at the Coastal Interpretive Center bring students into direct contact with the region’s science, stories and changing landscape. Contact our Education Manager for more information!

Ways to Get Involved

Onetime Classroom or Field Trip Sessions
Outdoor field trips, visits to the CIC Museum, and classroom lessons introduce students grades 1-12 to local biology, geology, ecology, and anthropology. Programs are aligned to meet WA State Science, Math, Literacy, and SEL standards while still making room for student exploration!

Integrated Student Sessions
Our preferred method of working with students involved at least 3 sessions: We'll visit your students in the classroom, then bring them outdoors or to the CIC Museum, and then return with them to the classroom. This builds context and improves learning outcomes.

College Internships
Students can apply for seasonal paid roles at the CIC Museum or in the field. CIC internships focus on potential natural & cultural resource career pathways with federal, tribal, and state agencies.

Overcoming Barriers to Access

Distance/Driving Time
Your class may not be able to plan driving time to physically visit the CIC Museum in Ocean Shores. But don’t worry, while students benefit from field trips, the CIC is also able to meet you in the classroom or school yard for most program opportunities. We also partner with numerous other local organizations to provide access to sites across the county. There just might be an outdoor learning opportunity or two closer to your school that you would think!

Transportation Costs
Transportation reimbursement requests are processed by Grays Harbor Community Foundation (GHCF) directly. Their phone number is 360-532-1600. Transportation expenses can include the cost of the driver, their meals, plus mileage. Invoices should be mailed directly to the foundation address at 705 J Street PO Box 615 Hoquiam, WA 98550. Invoices to GHCF should clearly state that reimbursement is for field trip bus services to the Coastal Interpretive Center.

Special Needs Accommodations
Educational programs, whether on site or in the field, can be difficult to take in for some students. CIC staff and volunteers are able to make special accommodations for students that require extra time or resources to fully embrace their learning experience.

Administrative Support
Planning an educational programs can be time-consuming but we don’t want that to keep your students from enjoying the CIC’s experiential learning opportunities. The CIC will work with your school administrators and district staff to provide all necessary documentation and answer any questions or concerns that may arise.
